73.1 Being Unafraid to Address an Assembly (அவை அஞ்சாமை)

Question:

Are there many people who are not afraid to speak in public?

Answer:

Many indeed may face death on the battlefield, but

there are only a few who can face an audience without fear.          (Couplet – 723)

பகையகத்துச் சாவார் எளியர் அரியர்

அவையகத்து அஞ்சா தவர்.                                                    (குறள் – 723)

Explanation:

Many people are scared to speak in public. Valluvar says that many people will be willing to face death on a battlefield. But there are only a few who can fearlessly face an audience. Dale Carnegie (1888 –1955) was an American writer, lecturer, and developer of famous courses in self-improvement, salesmanship, corporate training, public speaking, and interpersonal skills. In his book, The Quick and Easy Way to Effective Speaking, he says that eighty to ninety percent of college students fear public speaking. He says that the percentage of adults who are afraid of public speaking is probably higher than that of college students who fear public speaking. It is interesting to note that Valluvar and Dale Carnegie are in agreement.
