What is the reason for the world’s
existence?

The world exists because
of courteous people. Otherwise,
it will be covered by
dust and buried. (Couplet – 996)
பண்புடையார்ப்
பட்டுண்டு உலகம் அதுஇன்றேல்
மண்புக்கு
மாய்வது மன். (குறள் – 996)
Explanation:
In Couplet
996, Valluvar asserts that the world exists because there are courteous people
in the world. Similar idea is expressed by the Pandya king Kadalul Maaintha Ilampervazuthi
(கடலுள் மாய்ந்த இளம்பெருவழுதி) in poem 182 of Puranaanuuru[1]. In that poem, the king mentions
that people with noble qualities are the reason for the world’s existence.
