 76.1 On Making Wealth

Question:

              What makes worthless men worthy?

Answer:

There is nothing more precious than wealth which

converts worthless men worthy.                                  (Couplet – 751)

பொருளல் லவரைப் பொருளாகச் செய்யும்

பொருளல்லது இல்லை பொருள்.                                 (குறள் – 751)

 

Explanation:

In general, those who are poor and without wealth, those who lack morals and integrity, and those who are idle and irresponsible without work/career are not respected and are considered worthless. But even worthless men are respected and recognized if they are wealthy. The idea in couplet 751 is that in this material world, even worthless men become men of consequence when they acquire wealth. Therefore, acquiring wealth is essential, not to be despised.
