 82.5 Evil Friendship

            How to handle evil friendships?

           

Answer:

Even if a friend shows excessive love towards you, it is better

 to reduce the friendship with him, if he lacks good character.        (Couplet- 811)

Gradually abandon the friendship of these who create

problems for accomplishing tasks that can be easily performed.     (Couplet- 818)

பருகுவார் போலினும் பண்பிலார் கேண்மை

பெருகலிற் குன்றல் இனிது.                                                                    (குறள் – 811)

ஒல்லும் கருமம் உடற்று பவர்கேண்மை

சொல்லாடார் சோர விடல்.                                                                      (குறள் – 818)

                                                                               

Explanation:

            In Couplet 811, Valluvar says that even if your friend shows excessive love towards you, you should gradually reduce your friendship with him if you find him to be lacking good character. In Couplet 818, he mentions that you should abandon the friendship of those who might hinder your progress. According to Valluvar, the friendships mentioned in couplets 811 and 818 are both evil. Once friendships are developed, it is difficult to abandon them abruptly. So, if you find your friendship with someone undesirable or evil, it is better to reduce it gradually and eventually discontinue it. Because of the futility of evil friendships, it is better to investigate and do the due diligence before making friendships.
