95.2 Medicine
Question:
What is the proper way to eat to maintain good health?
Answer:
No medicine is needed if one eats only after digesting
what one
has already eaten. (Couplet – 942)
Eating in moderation after digestion is a sure way of
attaining
longevity. (Couplet – 943)
Knowing well that the previous meal has been digested,
and
when there is a good appetite, one should eat what is
agreeable
to one’s body. (Couplet – 944)
Agreeable food in
moderation ensures the absence of diseases. (Couplet – 945)
மருந்தென வேண்டாவாம் யாக்கைக்கு அருந்தியது
அற்றது போற்றி உணின். (குறள் – 942)
அற்றால் அளவறிந்து உண்க அஃதுடம்பு
பெற்றான் நெடிதுய்க்கும் ஆறு. (குறள் – 943)
அற்றது அறிந்து கடைப்பிடித்து மாறல்ல
துய்க்க துவரப் பசித்து. (குறள் – 944)
மாறுபாடு இல்லாத உண்டி மறுத்துண்ணின்
ஊறுபாடு இல்லை உயிர்க்கு. (குறள் – 945)
Explanation:
In
the four couplets mentioned above, Valluvar emphasizes that one should eat the
food agreeable to one in moderation after ensuring that the meal eaten earlier
has been fully digested. Also, according to Valluvar, if one strictly follows
these guidelines , then one does not need any medicines and will live a disease-free
life for a long time.
Due to
significant advances in medical science in the past two millennia, we are now
aware of several new diseases and treatments. Some of these diseases have
nothing to do with the digestive system. So, these days, Valluvar’s guidelines mentioned
above for a disease-free life may be considered inadequate.
