Question:

            What is wrong with the wealth of discourteous people?

 

Answer:

The immense wealth of the discourteous people  is futile like

the  milk gone sour in an unclean vessel.                             (Couplet – 1000)

பண்பிலான் பெற்ற பெருஞ்செல்வம் நன்பால்

கலந்தீமை யால்திரிந் தற்று.                                   (குறள் – 1000)

 

Explanation:

            Wealth by itself is neither good nor bad. It is good or bad, depending upon how it is being used. In poem 189[1] of Puranaanuuru, the poet Maduraik Kanakkaayanaar Makanaar Nakkiiranaar (மதுரைக் கணக்காயனார் மகனார் நக்கீரனார்) says. “Between a mighty king and an uneducated hunter, everything is the same. They both can eat only a limited amount of food and wear only two sets of clothes (maybe more these days!). The worth of the wealth is that it can be used for charity to help others. If someone thinks they can enjoy all their wealth, they will fail in their efforts.” So the best use of the wealth is to help others. Valluvar says in Couplet 992 that courteous people will have love in their hearts. So conversely, discourteous people will not love anyone but themselves. They are unlikely to use their wealth to help others. Therefore, wealth at the hands of discourteous people is like milk gone sour because of an unclean vessel.
